Throughout the evolution of man, the human mind has proven to be both animalistic and intellectual. This duality has provided the instinct to survive and the ability to go beyond. It is within the realm of the beyond that religion emerged as way to navigate the issues relative to morality, natural design, longings of the heart and the afterlife.
For professed Catholics, our heavenly Father, through our learned conscience, the teachings of Jesus Christ, the written word of God and through our lived sacramental experience, he has given us knowledge of Himself. We are called daily to a shared reverence of the Holy Eucharist, a love for the litany of saints and the rule of moral guidance that unites us into a diverse, apostolic community of Faith. Placing Jesus Christ at the center of our lives becomes the clarion call to holiness. Through a higher understanding of our Catholic Faith we come to realize that we are not human beings having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience.
For the Catholic Church, while there is the glory of God in the world and in our sacred communities, we are in a battle with the secular world for the hearts and souls of men, women and the family. The negation of religious beliefs in society has caused injury to morality, the dignity of human life and further denigrates values that promote civility and respect. This distortion is having effects in the Catholic Church herself as we see a weakening of applied religious education, lowering Mass attendance and soft sacramental participation.
As we prepare ourselves to confront our current reality, it is important to remind ourselves of why the Catholic Church matters in the world. The glory and majesty of Catholic Church can be seen in the following manifestations:
A) The Word of God is Truth – a divine illustration of a moral and sanctified life.
B) Jesus Christ calls us to be His spiritual ambassadors on Earth.
C) The Holy Eucharist contains the perpetual power of transformation.
D) Our parishes are places of welcoming and community.
E) The sacramental life provides mystical guidance and wisdom.
F) Our American Catholic schools educate over 1.7 million children in all forms of faith formation and academic excellence in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.
G) Each day, the Catholic Church provides more human, medical, social services and outreach to the poor and suffering than any other agency in the country.
H) We are encouraged and challenged to be a light in the world and be a force for good.
With is, we have a responsibility to build thriving communities of faith that allow the above areas to grow and manifest our desire to build the Kingdom of God. Here are key areas to consider:
1) Build expectation and hope around vibrant parish liturgy.
2) Offer a variety of diverse faith formation experiences for all age groups.
3) Cultivate a culture of welcoming and respect for all.
4) Organize ongoing opportunities to celebrate through social events.
5) Execute quality communication strategies to reach every person.
6) Share the dynamic vision and needs of the parish family each month.
7) Establish a true appreciation for perpetual Adoration of the Holy Eucharist.
8) Create a process invite all to live a life of prayer, service and Discipleship.
As illustrated, there remains great hope and opportunity in the common practices of our Catholic Faith. Do not fear and do not get discouraged at the task at hand.
Prepare yourself by putting on the armor of Christ, armed with the spiritual weapons of the saving grace of our salvation in Jesus Christ, your enduring optimism and joy in the human spirit and being a light in the world.
