Social Dynamics
The study of social dynamics is concerned with the behavior of groups, the interactions between a group’s members, and the complex social behaviors that emerge from groups. Ongoing research in this field has further proven a known precept: human beings are inherently social creatures, and the human brain is quite adept at deep social interactions that require empathy, cooperation, and collaboration.
This ability to form beneficial and reliable bonds with others has given us an impressive evolutionary and organizational advantage.
Advancing Philanthropy
With Philanthropy being the love of humanity and the voluntary act of giving and generosity, in far too many of our parishes and schools, the focus is on frenzied fundraising activities that tend to neglect the role of building meaningful relationships.
At Catholic Vitality 360, we promote a “relationship-first” approach to advancing your mission and vision with a bold and compelling story of impact and success.
We teach, through our leadership coaching, workshops and partnerships that your vitality is in direct proportion to the QUALITY of your relationships, vision and processes. We need to engage people personally and tell our story.
Thus, if you are struggling with sustaining volunteers, poor fundraising results or limited donor engagement, it is time to change the game and personally connect with people that care about your story and mission. Knowing the science of the human brain, the Art of Philanthropy is concerned with the emotional connection that brings people together for a common cause.
All forms of giving come from social emotion and is activated by our family-bonding hormone, oxytocin, which when activated in personal encounters, remains instrumental in building bonded networks and thriving communities. We need to get out of the office and visit with our people.
The 100 In 100 Engagement Process
Recently, in working with a Catholic school president who felt weighed down by donor spreadsheets, raffle ticket fatigue, and the pending work required for the upcoming auction; we introduced this concept of 100 in 100. What evolved into the 100 In 100 Engagement Process is the identification, scheduling, and visiting 100 school stakeholders in 100 days. Through a process of reworking duties and the office calendar, creating a time-boxing strategy, and setting this as a top priority; this singular strategy has completely transformed his relationships and dramatically increased giving and volunteer engagement. Here are the five key steps:
Step #1: Identify the Top 100 Stakeholders: Through discussions, review of records and suggestions, create a master list of these important stakeholders: parents, faculty, council members, clergy, diocesan leaders, community members, donors, alumni, business and friends.
Step #2: Prepare Invite Letter and Presentation: Create one-page letter of invitation telling them about yourself along with the purpose and intent of visit. Prepare questions that will guide the conversations: family connections, impressions of the school, areas you like, concerns, areas of improvement and vision for the future. Can meet at school or home and at breakfast or lunch.
Step #3: Send Invite Letter and Schedule Appointment: Letter is sent and follow-up call is made to schedule appointment. Give options on dates, times and locations.
Step #4: Make Visit: The visit is one-hour and conversational with questions, taking notes and active listening. Informal discussion consists of hopes, vision, family involvement, school activities, etc. This is not a solicitation for any gift or volunteer opportunity – just a fun and meaningful visit. More listening than controlling the narrative. You can present a gift and packet of more information. Can do one, two or three visits each day over 100 days.
Step #5: Follow Up: Within a week of the visit, a thank you note is sent referencing in general terms the content of the discussion. A phone call is also a nice touch. There is an open invitation to visit the parish/school at any time and a sincere appeal to continue the communication process.
Records are updated regarding each visit and these 100 stakeholders receive regular school communication pieces and invitations to school activities.
The feedback on this process has been so positive and it taps into our need for meaningful connection and bonding. Over time, other department leaders can utilize this method and personally connect with hundreds of key stakeholders. Imagine the impact of building meaningful relationships on the life and vitality of the parish and school. Start today with 10 in 10, 20 in 20 or 30 in 30, as I can assure you, it is a wise use of your time and resources. Please drop me a line and let me know how you are doing.
