Finding Your Passion & Purpose in the Ministry of Catholic Education

“We must know that we have been created for greater things, not just to be a number in the world, not just to go for diplomas and degrees, this work and that work. We have been created in order to love and to be loved.” - St. Teresa of Calcutta

The Best Version of Yourself

Notable and prolific Catholic author and speaker Matthew Kelly, in his books and videos is consistently invoking this theme of becoming the best version of ourselves. In fact, Kelly calls this our “essential purpose.”

As the author of over two dozen books and numerous popular videos, Kelly challenges all of us to go deeper into our faith life, believe in the power of prayer and unlock our abundant human capabilities.

At Catholic Vitality 360, through our ELEVATE Leadership Coaching Process, we invite all those working in the ministry of Catholic education to find their passion and purpose and to live a life of hope, abundance, service and gratitude.

As Catholic doctrine teaches, we are made by our creator God in His image, endowed with many gifts, recognizing the sacred dignity of every human person. Our baptismal call, and our greatest fulfillment is to serve God, the Church and others.

The Passion & Purpose Exercise

For Catholic school leaders, there is a strong desire to build a culture of vitality and growth that sustains the stated mission and vision. We wish to be part of a spirit-filled and Christ-centered community that promotes high standards of excellence and the moral good. We desire more than just a job, but a special vocation that contributes greatly to uplifting people’s lives and building the Kingdom of God.

This elevated mindset requires seeing the value of maintaining our passion and purpose each day, every month and throughout the school year. Based on the Passion and Purpose Exercise (see worksheet below), your own passion and purpose lies within the intersection of these key aspects of your spiritual, family and work life. As a journey of self-discovery and understanding, this exercise seeks to clarify your passion and to be mindful each day of your purpose.

As a personal reflection, here are the components of the Passion and Purpose Exercise:

  • Your Gifts and Talents: Provide a list of your professional skills, noteworthy aptitudes and acquired areas of expertise.
  • What I Love: Those areas of your life that spark your creativity, attention, imagination and passion.
  • I am at my Best When: Special times when you are in the zone with confidence, conviction and living your best life.
  • Areas of Growth: Critical features of your life that can be improved, cultivated and enhanced.
  • Plan of Action: The creation of three bold and audacious action items that can be transformative.

Essential Elements for the Journey

As you seek daily alignment with your passion, purpose and actions, the following are essential elements in living a life of extraordinary significance:

  • Essential Element #1: Bring Jesus Christ to the Center of Your Life through prayer, reflection, silence and a meaningful sacramental life.
  • Essential Element #2: Seek Oneness in all aspects of your Life. Your faith life, work, relationships, finances, and family are all part of a holistic lifestyle.
  • Essential Element #3: Understand the Real Presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist. More than just symbolic, the miraculous nature of the Mass takes on a new and majestic meaning.
  • Essential Element #4: Recognize the Dignity of every Human Person. Treat everyone with the dignity and respect that you wish to receive. What you put out; you get back.
  • Essential Element #5: Surround Yourself with Positive, Uplifting People. No gossip and jettison negativity, be the solution and team-player.
  • Essential Element #6: Cultivate Radical Gratitude. Be appreciative of all of your abundance, and support those who are struggling. Also, ask for help.
  • Essential Element #7: Find Time each Day to Pray and enjoy the Classroom of Silence. God speaks to us in silence as we learn to listen to His voice.
  • Essential Element #8: Build Trust by Doing What you Say. Match your words with your actions, as you become a person of integrity – worthy of trust.
  • Essential Element #9: Embrace the Instructional Power of Suffering and Sacrifice. There are inspirational, transformative lessons in the struggle and God is always inviting us to learn and grow.
  • Essential Element #10: Work each Day on a Personal Growth Plan (PGP). Write down your goals and review them each morning. Design your day and activity around your sacred and divinely inspired vision. Celebrate all victories.
